The National Youth Agency's annual audit of England's local authority youth services, published last week, revealed a shift in youth worker recruitment.
In 2003-04 there were 5,370 full-time youth workers, an increase of 1,940 on 2002-03. The number of part-time youth support workers fell from 19,520 in 2002-03 to 17,700 in 2003-04.
The audit, England's Local Authority Youth Services: The Basic Facts 2003-04, also found that youth services spent an average of 71 per 13- to 19-year-old and that there was one worker for every 540 young people.
It showed that 23.5 per cent of 13- to 19-year-olds are in contact with youth services. The amount of money spent on youth services from the education budget in 2003-04 was 305.7m out of the 513m available for youth and community services.
