The council slashed its youth service budget from 3.8m to about 1.3m a year ago, forcing most of the service's nearly 200-strong workforce to leave (YPN, 11-17 January 2006, p2).
But Gordon Stewart, who was appointed county commissioner for youth services in the subsequent restructure, claims this has not prevented council-funded services doubling the involvement of young people.
He said that at the last count two weeks ago, about 7,000 13- to-19-year-olds had been registered as active participants in youth work, which means they have attended at least three youth work sessions since April 2006.
This compares with about 3,700 for April 2005 to January 2006. Of the 7,000, 60 per cent have achieved recorded outcomes.
