Youth Services: Cutbacks threaten future of Bradford youth centres

Bradford Council wants to discontinue its Community Development Service, which supports the centres, to claw back 1m of a council-wide overspend of 3.5m. As an alternative, councillors propose to allow the centres to bid for funds from an overall commissioning budget, to which they plan to add an extra 700,000.

Liz Devlin, Unison branch manager, said: "These centres provide youth work activities - there is no doubt that these cuts will have a major impact on their ability to carry out these services." She added that the cuts would put up to 75 jobs at risk, including those of frontline youth workers and administrative staff with bidding expertise.
