YOUTH SERVICE: Leeds wins contract to deliver Connexions to excluded teens

1 min read

This figure will be match-funded by Leeds Youth Service and the contract will start by 1 April. The intention is to develop a Connexions delivery model for socially excluded young people based on the youth service's CYPAC (Connecting Young People at Compton) project.

CYPAC runs from a disused part of a public library in Compton, a densely populated area of Leeds with high levels of deprivation.

Under the new contract, Connexions will be rolled out in sports centres, mobile units and a city centre one-stop shop, creating around 16 youth work jobs.

Leslie Wood, a senior youth officer in Leeds, said: "Many socially excluded young people live in large estates bordering the city. The city centre is seen as a prosperous, expensive place with nothing for them to do. It's a question of horizons rather than transport. The area they see as safe is very small."
