Youth participation projects can be tricky, but if handled correctly they can make a difference to young people's lives. Helen Gregory speaks to a range of projects that have made an impact.

"I didn't used to bother about the local authority but now I feel that if I say something they'll listen to me," says Charlene.

Participation has become a real buzzword in the youth sector. Most organisations from care homes to hospitals and Connexions teams are looking at ways to actively involve more young people in the decision-making process. Abi Carter, youth participation co-ordinator at Carnegie Young People Initiative, believes participation is firmly on the agenda of many organisations. "Youth participation is now occurring to more people - especially more senior people within organisations - earlier, while a few years ago it was left just to those who really championed it."
