Although "participation" is a buzz word in youth work, there is little agreement on what we mean by the term. Is it young people getting involved in a youth group or a community project? In some cases, it might just be a question of getting them to walk through the door. Is it about government and citizenship? Is it merely a tool to integrate young people with existing structures and further adults' own agendas of tokenistic involvement?
Power to young people
Participation is about being actively involved in decision-making and having an influence over the decisions made. Putting this into practice involves seeing young people as fellow citizens, and working with them to have their rights recognised and developed.
