Speaking at a breakfast meeting co-hosted by Centrepoint, the National Youth agency and CYP Now at this week's Lib Dem conference, Simon Hughes said it was necessary to target services for young people. "The government has now realised the importance of youth services, but the youth offer has to be tailored to the individual," said Hughes. "We need significant amounts of youth workers and new buildings, but we have to give an individual offer."
Hughes also said mentors should be introduced in primary schools to help engage young people. "You have to start at primary school age to make sure young people feel secure in their community. If you can find a mentor for every youngster in the last year of primary school you can support them in what can be difficult years at secondary school," he said.
