Hughes, who spoke as a witness at the Home Affairs Select Committee on knife crime last month, believes youth workers could play a big role in driving down weapons-related crime.
"As a former youth worker, I know the positive impact youth workers can have on hard-to-reach young people," he said. "If there was a detached youth worker in every ward in Greater London, the impact could be dramatic. Youth workers could be out in the community as role models and provide support systems for individuals."
