Youth Magazine Round-up

Is the UK suffering from "ginger-phobia", asks the latest issue of Kingston-upon-Thames' Youth Unlimited magazine. Despite the UK having one of the highest redhead populations, ginger-haired people are still routinely ridiculed. But, argues Amy Solman, hate shouldn't be a follicle matter: "Only we can stand up for the rights of those different to us, not just redheads but anyone who is born a little different to the norm."

Young people from journalism training scheme Headliners interviewed uber-cool designer Richard Shoyemi for their online magazine. Twenty-year-old Shoyemi tells the young reporters how a design workshop at The Crib youth centre set him on the road to success. "I didn't even know I was gonna become a designer or fashion stylist and they saw my talent and entered me into a competition," says Shoyemi.

Kitty Vaughan had a tough 2008. The young writer for the online magazine InSite says coping with her mother's mental illness on top of A-levels put her under immense pressure. "Verbal abuse was a daily event and at times there was fear of it turning physical," she says. Despite such adversity, she still secured a place at university. "When you put your mind to it, you will achieve all you wish for," says Kitty.
