Youth Justice News: Antisocial behaviour - Home Office says turn toAsbos first

Lord Bassam of Brighton said that where communities are suffering from antisocial behaviour it can be right for the authorities to respond with an order, rather than using less serious interventions, such as an acceptable behaviour contract.

Bassam made the comment during a debate on the Youth Justice Board research into antisocial behaviour orders (YPN, 8-14 November 2006, p7).

The research found that most professionals favour a tiered approach to dealing with antisocial behaviour, with a series of interventions tried before an application for an order is made. Baroness Stern, a cross-bench peer and former director of crime-reduction charity Nacro, called for a less punitive approach to antisocial behaviour.
