Youth Justice News: Antisocial behaviour - Hanging around is notseen as a sign of antisocial behaviour

An analysis of figures from the 2004-05 survey, Perceptions and experience of anti-social behaviour, published last week, shows that two-thirds of people witness young people hanging around. Only 47 per cent of these saw this as a problem; 53 per cent said it was not an issue.

The latest figures from the British Crime Survey, also released last week, show that the proportion of people who see teenagers hanging around on the streets as a "very" or "fairly big" problem in their area has risen from 31 per cent in 2004-05 to 32 per cent in 2005-06.

Of the seven indicators - which include people using or dealing drugs, burnt-out cars, and vandalism - teenagers hanging around is the most widely reported problem.
