The data, given in response to a question in Parliament, also shows a wide variation in the number of antisocial behaviour orders (ASBOs) issued in different court areas, and that only a handful of ASBO applications were turned down.
In the first six months of 2004, magistrates' courts in Greater Manchester issued 83 ASBOs, and West Yorkshire issued 101. But other areas of England and Wales, such as Suffolk and Devon and Cornwall, issued none.
Tim Bateman, senior policy and development officer at crime-reduction charity Nacro, said: "This data reflects the difference between the areas where ASBOs are used at the first opportunity and those areas where ASBOs are used as part of a staged process."
