Youth justice: Myatt inquest to interview mother

1 min read

The four-week inquest into the death of Gareth Myatt is the first to look at the restraint-related death of a young person. The inquest began today.

Myatt's family will be represented by lawyers linked to bereavement group Inquest, which is concerned about the type of restraint and the appropriateness of the force used.

Deborah Coles, co-director of the group, said: "The inquest is an inadequate forum for wider questions about the use of custody for children. We would argue for a public inquiry."

Myatt died in April 2004 after being restrained at Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre. This is the first of three inquests on young people who died in custody set for this year.
