Youth custody: Myatt jury verdict: accidental death

After two days of deliberations, the jury at the inquest into the death of Gareth Myatt at Rainsbrook STC decided his death was accidental.

But jurors criticised the YJB, claiming that a failure to undertake a medical review of the restraint method used on Myatt contributed to his death and that a lack of "response and action" by the YJB to reports from Rainsbrook also contributed.

Deborah Coles, co-director of bereavement charity Inquest, said the group was seeking a meeting with the new secretary of state for justice, Jack Straw.

"It became clear that there was an abdication of the YJB and its responsibility for the safety of children," she said.
