Figures from the Youth Justice Board's Youth Justice Annual Statistics 2005/06 show the number of breaches of intensive supervision and surveillance programmes resulting in custody rose from 377 in 2004-05 to 825 in 2005-06.
The trend is due in part to increasing numbers on the programme (5,568 started in 2005-06 and 4,960 the previous year). The number of breaches overall has shot up from 1,344 to 2,738. A YJB spokesman said the rise was down to a determination to ensure the programme is rigorously enforced.
