Posters will be put up in high knife crime areas, such as Manchester, south Wales and some London boroughs. The amnesty will run until 30 June, but anyone carrying a knife will still be arrested if they are not on their way to an amnesty bin.
Last week, 15-year-old Kiyan Prince died after being stabbed outside his school in Edgware, northwest London. Tom Sackville, assistant director of prevention services at charity Crime Concern, said: "There has been a high profile around gun crime, with less focus on knives."
