Youth Justice News: Violent crime - Knife crime policies criticisedby charity

The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies report, Knife Crime: Ineffective reactions to a distracting problem?, says moves to increase the sentence for carrying a knife, and the knife amnesty, do not make sense.

Chris Eades, policy and information officer at the charity, said: "The Government's targeting of young people is going to cause huge problems.

It fails to take into account that young people are far more likely to be the victims of violent crime.

"It is feelings of insecurity and lack of safety that cause knife carrying. Focusing on knife crime is a red herring because it is just one expression of violence."
