Youth Justice: Government set to publish justice bill

The Home Office has been working on a youth justice bill, and has been considering whether to publish this as a standalone bill, or to include the key clauses in other legislation.

Although the Home Office would not confirm the content of the police and justice bill, youth justice insiders suggested the Government still intends to publish a separate youth justice bill.

This is likely to contain measures including clarifying that the purpose of sentencing young offenders is to prevent reoffending, and to introduce a single community order.

The police and justice bill is likely to include proposals to standardize the powers of police community support officers.
