Youth Justice: Commission set up to halt youth crime

The Commission on Young Adults and the Criminal Justice System, set up by social justice charity the Barrow Cadbury Trust, is driven by concerns about the gap in crime intervention measures for young people classified as adults.

The 12-strong body will examine approaches outside England and Wales for preventing offending and the impact of age on the way a young offender is dealt with by the criminal justice system. It will propose ways of tackling risk factors associated with male offending.

It will also challenge the feasibility of the minimum ages of criminal responsibility under Scottish and English law. Its research will culminate in a report to the Home Office next spring.
