Youth Justice: Budget gives cash for antisocial behaviour projects

The Chancellor gave 2m to the Football Foundation to run projects using football to tackle antisocial behaviour, in last weeks Budget.

Gordon Brown said the money is for a new venture between police, premier league football clubs and community groups with the Football Foundation to offer young people evening sports and to tackle antisocial behaviour.

The Football Foundation said the money was a welcome recognition of the impact football can have in reducing antisocial behaviour. A spokesman said the projects would complement existing schemes, such as its work with Positive Futures.

In the Budget, Brown also announced 100m to aid the recruitment of Police Community Support Officers. The Government wants to increase the number from about 6,000 in September last year to 16,000 by April 2007.
