Youth Justice Board considers post-custody accommodation

1 min read Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Board is considering providing "step-down" accommodation to young offenders to help them adjust to adult life outside of custody, its chair has told CYP Now.

Frances Done said the move was one option being discussed in a bid to better support young people leaving custody. The discussions form part of the YJB's new secure estate strategy, which will be published for consultation around the same time as the government's youth crime action plan, which is due out in July.

Done said the document would contain proposals looking at alternatives to custody in a bid to focus on young people's needs. "We're looking at alternatives to custody and residential provision - not for everyone but certain types of young people who need a lot of support, and also step-down accommodation after custody as there's a big 'fall off the edge' type moment for young people," she said.
