Youth custody: Death in custody prompts calls for investigation into system

Adam's death has prompted calls for an investigation into the treatment of young people in custody and increased concerns about privately run detention centres, such as the Hassockfield Secure Training Centre in County Durham, where he died.

Deborah Coles, co-director of contentious deaths campaign group Inquest, said: "The Home Secretary can no longer resist the call for a public inquiry into the treatment of children by the criminal justice system."

Adam became the youngest person to die in custody when he was found hanging in his cell at the facility last week. A coroner's inquiry is needed to establish the cause of death, but officers from Durham Constabulary found no suspicious circumstances and Adam's mother believed her son was suicidal.
