And, unfortunately, the latest death also happened in a secure training centre, one of three such units in England that provide what is billed as a compassionate atmosphere for inmates.

Adam Rickwood, a 14-year-old from Burnley, was found hanging in his cell 115 miles from home at Hassockfield Secure Training Centre in County Durham, in the early hours of Monday 9 August. The 42-bed establishment is operated by Medomsley Training Services, a subsidiary of Premier Custodial Group.

The Rainsbrook centre houses 76 young offenders and is run by Rebound ECD, part of security services provider Group 4 Falck.
