Instead they prefer to go to the cinema, and watch or play sport. One of the least popular activities was voluntary or charity work, with just 16 per cent saying they had given up time to help in their communities.
Alison Park, a senior researcher at the centre who helped compile the Young People's Social Attitudes survey, said: "Although there are large proportions of young people getting out and about, very few are involved in what could be described as civic activities."
But a spokesman for the National Association of Clubs for Young People said it was good that 20 per cent of young people were benefiting from youth clubs. "Every young person should have the opportunity to attend a youth club," he said. "The focus now needs to be on extending this to everyone."
