The Institute for Public Policy Research has been working on a report, Freedom's Orphans: Raising Youth in a Changing World, on youth policy (YPN, 26 April-2 May, p6). Researchers found that structured activities have a beneficial impact on young people's personal and social skills.
The report will recommend that there should be enough structured activity for every 11- to 16-year-old to take part once a week. The think-tank has calculated that there are 11,095 youth clubs in England, catering for 1.2 million young people, and will say that there needs to be provision for all the 4.6 million young people in that age group.
