The findings are contained in two studies produced for charity 4Children's Make Space youth initiative. One looked at the integration of youth services at local authority level, and the other at how successful youth clubs are at linking services.
Leon Feinstein, director of the Centre for the Benefits of Wider Learning at the Institute of Education, worked on the latter study. Previous research from Feinstein has been seen as critical of the impact of unstructured activity on social development.
But in this latest analysis he concluded more integrated clubs can overcome these difficulties. "There was evidence to support the hypothesis that clubs offering more of a wraparound service were more likely to achieve positive outcomes," he said.
