Political values form an integral part of Britain's democratic society. Vanessa Rogers suggests exercises to help young people get to grips with the issues of politics, democracy, voting and campaigning for change.

GIVE ME THE MEANING

Aim This warm-up encourages young people to think about the meaning of some words used in the world of politics, and gives you the opportunity to check out their existing knowledge.

You will need

How to do it Split the young people into five groups and hand each group markers and a headed flipchart sheet. Ask them to read the word associated with politics on their sheet and then fold the paper over so that no one else can see it.

The task is for each group to decide on a definition for the word and then draw pictures to represent it, without actually writing it. Once all the groups have finished, invite a representative from each group to present the sheet to the rest of the group.
