YOUTH CAMPAIGNING: How do you get them to listen?

Young people are increasingly managing to make their voices heard at global events. Toby Gethin reports on how they fared at the World Trade Organisation talks in Cancun, Mexico.

"What kind of direct action are you thinking of?" I replied. "You know, smashing windows and things."

I wasn't at Cancun, Mexico, to cause trouble. Maybe because of the images of young people as protesters, I think many delegates and journalists found it rather surprising to have young people in the "official" areas of the conference and security certainly made sure that I was not trying to intrude on areas that were only for the approved people at this exclusive meeting.

The tourist resort, with its easily blockaded conference centre, was surprisingly quiet in the build-up to such prestigious talks. That there weren't more young activists around the convention centre itself was surprising.
