
Attempts to create a unified organisation to represent voluntary youth groups on the national stage have failed, CYP Now has learned.
The two main voluntary youth work membership organisations - Clubs for Young People and UK Youth - rekindled merger talks, which first began 50 years ago, in September 2006. But it emerged last week that talks between the two sides had collapsed again.
John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth, said: "We spent a lot of time looking at the pros and cons and reached a point where we thought it best to remain as we are."
But Nick Wilkie, chief executive of London Youth, which is affiliated to both organisations, said he was disappointed. "It would have been better to have one strong organisation than a proliferation of different leadership," he said.
