Young people hit back at stereotypes

Youth Work
A group of young people in the North East have been tackling head on the negative portrayal of young people in the media in the region.

More than 30 young people from Stockton and Darlington have been involved in the nine-month project, which was supported by Darlington YMCA, Y Care International and funded by the Department for International Development.

The group contacted their local MP Phil Wilson to inform him about issues of concern, set up a regional youth forum and have established a youth newsletter in the local newspaper in a bid to to encourage more positive images of young people.

Rebecca Gaunt, youth worker at Darlington YMCA, said: "The project has had a tangible effect on the local community. Young people have worked hard to repair community cohesion and build stronger relationships across the community, particularly with MPs and the police."
