Young people condemn plans to close Connexions centres

1 min read Youth Work
Young people have slammed plans to shut several Connexions centres in Hampshire, fearing they could be left with inferior services.

Hampshire County Council last week decided to merge functions previously delivered by youth teams and South Central Connexions staff with its children's services department in a bid to streamline services.

As part of the plans, services previously delivered in Connexions centres will be provided from alternative sites such as community centres, voluntary groups and schools.

But Abby Harris, a 16-year-old who has regularly used the I-stop and Fareham Connexions centres during the past two years, warned services moved into buildings such as schools are unlikely to be well used.

"Losing the centres is a pretty big deal," she told CYP Now. "It's our own space. I don't think it's a good idea if they put services into youth clubs or schools. Young people won't have the confidence to go into a school to see a personal adviser because it's a public area and people might be watching them."
