YOUNG OFFENDERS: Tories claim better education is vital

At its annual conference in Blackpool this week, Charles Hendry, shadow minister for young people, was due to tell a YMCA England fringe event that education is a vital weapon in getting people out of crime.

"Young people in good jobs are much less likely to commit crimes than those with no income," Hendry will say. "If the State is going to lock someone away, then surely it has a responsibility to ensure that every young person leaves prison literate and numerate.

"It should be a priority to ensure that every young offender leaves prison with the life skills to keep them off the conveyor belt of crime."
