YOUNG OFFENDERS: Initiative covers graffiti with art

1 min read

The scheme, in which the teenage boys painted a mural over graffiti, has also improved public perception of safety.

Partners in the project were the West Sussex youth offending team, crime-prevention organisation Nacro, arts-based young offenders project Artscape and West Sussex County Council. The council has set a target of removing graffiti from all its properties within 72 hours of it being reported.

Terry Bishop, head of youth offending services for West Sussex, said: "This is community service in practice - young people making good."

Ralph Wright, area highways manager for the town, said: "Improving our subways is important and we hope to extend the scheme. The young men have done a very good job, and people find it a safer place to use."
