Young need to be more streetwise

1 min read Education Youth Work
Children are growing up in fear of a hostile world and parents have lost confidence in letting their children play outdoors, Conservative leader David Cameron said this week.

He said children need to be taught practical street skills, such as memorising their address and phone number, and given specific advice on personal safety rather than general warnings.

Launching More Ball Games, the latest stage of the party's childhood review, Cameron said Britain has "a culture which fails to set the right boundaries for children, making it harder for them to grow into happy, confident and responsible adults."

The party's report said there needs to be better recording of crimes against children, more policing and improved neighbourhood support. The proposals also backed the creation of more child-friendly streets, a greater focus on improving children's resilience and making the young more streetwise.
