Research funded by the Teenage Pregnancy Unit found that half the young women interviewed had been disengaged from school prior to their pregnancy.
"Disengagement from education ... was often a key factor in their pregnancy," states the report, The Education of Pregnant Young Women and Young Mothers in England. "Policies to encourage the re-engagement of young mothers must address problems experienced prior to their pregnancy." These include truanting, bullying or problems with school work.
The report, produced by the Universities of Bristol and Newcastle, calls for educational provision for pregnant schoolgirls and young mums to be geared towards their needs. It finds that childcare and transport are the main barriers to their education.
