YOT boards need housing support

Youth Justice
Staff from housing departments should sit on youth offending team (YOT) management boards, the Association of YOT Managers (AYM) has said.

Mike Thomas, chair of the AYM, said housing should be the sixth statutory partner in YOTs to give young people better all-round support.

"A critical thing is for housing associations to be represented on YOT management boards but also for housing staff to be seconded into YOTs," he said. "It's important because we have young people coming out of custody into unsuitable placements with a number of 16- and 17-year-olds who are just moving from place to place."

He said 800 young people were locked up every year because of unsuitable housing and work was needed to make sure young people were given proper support.
