YOT managers want implementation of Bercow report

1 min read Youth Justice
The Association of Youth Offending Team Managers (AYM) has called for the findings of the Bercow review to be included in the forthcoming youth crime action plan.
This week, Conservative MP John Bercow published his report on speech and language therapy.

Now Mike Thomas, chair of the AYM, has urged the government to think more roundly about the challenges faced by young people who offend.

"The publication of the action plan provides the right platform at the right time to wrap up some of the key points highlighted by Bercow as impacting on young offenders and their ability to turn away from crime," he said.

The AYM said around 7,000 young criminals passed through young offender institutions every year, with around 60 per cent suffering from speech, language and communication issues that hinder their efforts to communicate effectively with staff. Thomas added: "The AYM applauds the ministerial impetus this issue has received but now we must all move quickly to maximise the impact of Bercow's findings and implement them in the action plan as soon as practicable."
