YJB review is trying to counter Tory plans

A major review of the Youth Justice Board (YJB) just months before a general election could be part of a plan to scupper the Conservatives from breaking up the agency, it has been claimed.

Last week, the Ministry of Justice announced a wide-ranging review of the YJB will take place to assess how well major projects are managed and the way in which custodial places are commissioned by the agency.

The review, chaired jointly by YJB chair Frances Done and Dame Susan Street, is due to report in February, a matter of months before a general election takes place.

One youth justice expert, who asked not to be named, told CYP Now the fact that the review is taking place just prior to an election is unlikely to be coincidence.

"This terrain is going to be up for grabs after the election under what I predict will be a Conservative government," the expert said.
