YJB chair criticises scrapping of YOIs for young adults

Controversial government plans to scrap young offender institutions (YOIs) for 18- to 20-year-olds have been criticised by the chair of the Youth Justice Board (YJB).

Speaking at the annual YJB convention in Birmingham, Frances Done said proposals to send all over-18s to adult jails risk jeopardising recent improvements to the youth justice system.

The Ministry of Justice claim the proposals will allow young people to receive better resettlement support and be placed closer to home.

But Done, who is due to end her tenure as chair of the YJB in January, said the YJB would be opposing the move in its response to an ongoing consultation.

“I’m really concerned about the proposals to place 18-year-olds in adult prisons,” she told delegates.

“Many are looked-after children.

“There are so much better things we can do for these children.”
