YJB looks at key worker system

Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Board (YJB) is exploring a system to provide young offenders with a single key worker for their entire time in custody.

CYP Now has learned that a key worker team of 32 staff has been put inplace at Hindley Young Offender Institution (YOI) in Wigan.

Previously young people have dealt separately with an internal youthoffending team worker, a substance misuse service worker and otherstaff, as well as a personal officer. Management at Hindley found thiscould confuse young people and led to a duplication of work.

The YJB is carrying out a review to assess whether the system should beused across the entire secure estate.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "The Personal Officers Scheme waslaunched at HMP YOI Hindley in June 2009. Early feedback has been goodand a formal review will be conducted later in the year."
