YJB consultants do not undergo advanced-level security checks

1 min read Youth Justice
Youth Justice Board (YJB) consultants working on classified computer systems are not being security checked to the same level as regular staff, CYP Now can reveal.

Government statistics show that hundreds of YJB staff with access tosensitive information have had high-level security checks carried out onthem since 2003. The checks, which go beyond basic vetting, includecounter-terrorist and security clearance checks. Additional safeguardshave also been put in place to protect classified information.

But figures detailing who has been checked - released following aparliamentary question by Liberal Democrat MP David Howarth - show thatno consultants working for the YJB have been cleared at these higherlevel checks.

Consultants currently working for the YJB include chief informationofficer Mike Mackay who last year cost the agency 336,000 toemploy.

It is not clear how many consultants in total the organisation employsor what level of information they work with.
