YJB advises on pre-sentence reports

The reports allow youth offending teams to communicate with sentencers, and make recommendations about types of intervention.

David Monk, head of practice at the YJB, said that evidence suggests about a quarter of reports are unsatisfactory: "Our work shows that it is not better than that, it could be worse."

The guidance will be produced as part of revisions under the YJB's Youth Justice 2008 project. This will include work on national standards, operational guidance, and effective practice documents.

Ideas are being piloted in four youth offending teams, which have been given 20,000 each.
