Our young women tell us repeatedly they feel held back in male-dominated environments. Sadly, educational subjects remain split down traditional gender fault lines, with science still considered a male domain. If girls admit that they feel intimidated then the only way is to teach them in a female-only environment.
We would not endorse the concept of "science for girls" angled around, for example, child care or beauty therapy. The ultimate aim has to be that girls can compete on a level playing field in the job market, and not end up being steered into female-dominated jobs that are at the bottom of the salary league table.
