Workplace: Who's in your meetings? Dave Merrick, national participation development officer, Cafcass

1 min read
What exactly do you do? My job is to encourage and help Cafcass to involve children and young people in its work so that the organisation becomes more aware of their views about the service it provides.

Describe a typical day. Although based in Bristol, I often travel to meetings in different parts of the country. I could be at our national office in London to attend a meeting with people interested in developing different ways in which children and young people can influence our organisation. Last month I was in Swansea meeting with the children's commissioner for Wales to discuss ways in which children could influence the family justice system.

What other agencies, and who else within your organisation, do you work with? We have a partnership with the National Youth Agency, and they are helping us train our staff about the participation of young people. Young people from children's rights organisations also help with the training, and we have young trainers from the National Youth Agency who act as consultants to our child and user involvement group. I am also co-ordinating the pilot of an interactive computer software program aimed at obtaining feedback from children.
