Workplace: Ask the expert - What's your problem?

Young people smoking old-fashioned pipes, dropping Criminal Records Bureau checks and a knife crime storyline in EastEnders. Tracie Trimmer-Platman has the answers.

Q: A group of young people in my club have started smoking old-fashioned pipes. They say it is cheaper than buying cigarettes and believe the smoke is not so harmful. How should I tackle this?

A: I've heard of people turning to shisha instead of cigarettes but not the old-fashioned pipe - I guess this is taking retro all the way.

Pipe smoking might be a slightly more healthy option to cigarettes but only if you don't inhale. Even then, the potential damage to the mouth and jaw is enormous. Pipes also can make the breath smell especially foul and disfigure the teeth. Plus they are just as unwelcome in public places - in fact, they can be even more offensive as the volume of smoke produced is so large.
