-Q: I am planning a residential trip with a group. I've been asked to carry out the risk assessments and haven't a clue what to do.

Risk assessments are essential. They ensure that the activities planned for a group are safe and help to limit the unexpected while away. However, staff need to be equipped with the information and resources needed to carry out an assessment accurately. You must ask your organisation for both training and support in this and, at the very least, be given guidelines as to how this should work. If, however, you want to investigate this area further for yourself, the government guidelines on its Health and Safety Executive website (www.hse.gov.uk) might be of help.
