Workplace: Ask the expert - What's your problem?

Challenging homophobic language; how to deal sensitively with an unwanted teenage crush; and crossing the cultural divide. Tracie Trimmer-Platman has the answers.

- Q: I volunteer at a youth club that has a good policy against using abusive and offensive language. However, some young people frequently use the word "gay" as an insult. Should I challenge their language?

A: It is important to challenge it on several levels. Ask the group so that you understand why they use the word in this way and what it means to them. You can put into context what it sounds and feels like to hear it used in this way and how others outside the club might perceive it.

You can also challenge why they want "gayness" to be seen in a negative way. This might give you an opportunity to challenge negative stereotypes.
