Workers gain Early Years Foundation Stage qualification

Early Years
The first students to gain Early Years Professional Status after completing the longer pathways to the qualification took part in a ceremony to mark their achievement last week.

There are several routes to achieving the status and the 128 students who studied for 12 to 15 months join 1,590 others who have already completed shorter training courses. The qualification was introduced in 2006 and the government aims to have an early years professional in every setting by 2015.

Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell, who gave the opening speech at the ceremony, said: "As a mother of three young boys, I've experienced first-hand how vital it is to get learning right at an early age. I fully support this initiative, which will bring increased quality to the sector through the work of passionate and motivated staff in what are the most important years of a child's life."
