Work Wise: Numbers Game - Social attitudes

Four out of 10 people believe single parents and male gay couples are incapable of bringing up children as ably as heterosexual couples, according to the latest annual British Social Attitudes report.

Three out of 10 also believe the law should make it more difficult for married couples with young children to get divorced.

The report reveals that people's general attitudes towards family, marriage and personal life are more liberal now than they were 20 years ago. However, it also finds their views on how children should be brought up are far more traditional.

Professor Simon Duncan, co-author of the report, says: "Children seem to hold a particular position in people's attitudes to family life. When they are involved, alternative family arrangements are seen as less acceptable."
