Work Wise: Numbers game - Sexual health

One in 10 people under the age of 25 have chlamydia, according to the national screening programme's annual report.

However, the area testing the highest proportion of young residents, Lewisham Primary Care Trust (PCT), only screened 16.3 per cent of 15- to 24-year-olds.

More than 118,000 young women were tested across the country, compared with only 31,574 young men. While the top location for female screening was community contraceptive services, most male screenings took place in educational settings.

Government targets for 2008 will challenge PCTs to increase screening uptake, especially among men. Lisa Power, head of policy at the Terrence Higgins Trust, said: "The government needs to stop young men taking a 'Jack the lad' approach to sexual health."
